Aubrey McClendon Continues to Bet Big on the Utica Shale

Source: Chesapeake Energy.

Former Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) CEO Aubrey McClendon once boasted that the Utica Shale would prove to be "the biggest thing economically to hit Ohio, since maybe the plow." He called it a half-trillion dollar opportunity because "it sounds bigger" than a $500 billion opportunity. Unfortunately for McClendon, the Utica Shale didn't work out exactly how he envisioned it would. Many of his peers pulled back on the play after it turned out to be less oily than expected.

McClendon, however, never backed down. It's a good thing too because his former employer, Chesapeake Energy, is now certain that he was right and that the Utica Shale is a world-class energy asset. He likewise remains certain that the Utica's best days lie ahead as he's making a multibillion-dollar bet on the play through his new company, American Energy Partners.

McClendon's big bets
So far, McClendon has raised a whopping $8.7 billion to drill U.S. shale plays after recently raising another $4 billion. A third of these funds are earmarked toward the Utica Shale as McClendon also has his sights set on the Marcellus Shale and Permian Basin, where he is forming two new companies to target those plays.

What's interesting, given McClendon's history, is he actually has a lot of money to pursue his grand plan. What he doesn't have right now is the people nor the deals. In fact, he recently told a Houston energy conference that "I need deals and I need people" and one of the reasons he was presenting was because he was there on a recruiting mission.

That being said, this is a man who has already completed three Utica Shale deals this year. He spent $924 million to buy the 74,000 Utica Shale acres that Hess (NYSE: HES  ) sold earlier this year. On top of that, he completed a deal with ExxonMobil's (NYSE: XOM  ) XTO Energy unit to fund 100% of the near-term drilling costs of 55,000 net acres in a "core area" of the Utica Shale. In return, McClendon's company will receive ownership of 30,000 net acres from ExxonMobil in the Utica Shale. A third deal brought the company's total haul in the Utica Shale up to 130,000 net acres, which doubled its holdings in the region.

Source: Hess.

Just getting started
Despite all of this wheeling and dealing, McClendon is hungry for more. This is despite the fact that some of the acreage he is buying didn't hold compelling economics for the seller. Hess, for example, noted that the acreage it sold was primarily dry gas. The company concluded that the potential returns from the investment at both current and projected natural gas prices didn't justify retaining and drilling the acreage. That, however, doesn't mean it won't be economically appealing for McClendon's company to drill.

One thing that his former employer, Chesapeake Energy, is finding is that the dry gas potential of the Utica Shale is proving to be more lucrative than investors realize. The company and many of its peers are drilling impressive wells as seen on the following slide:

Source: Chesapeake Energy investor presentation (link opens a PDF).

As the slide notes, these wells have the potential to produce more than 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas equivalent during the lifespan of the well. To put that into perspective, the gas produced during the lifetime of one well is enough gas to supply all of the energy needs for 100,000 American homes for one year.

With the right cost structure, these wells can be highly profitable. It's a cost structure that Chesapeake Energy has, which is why it sees so much value in the more than 2,000 future well locations it possesses. It's this same value that McClendon sees in the Utica whether it's in the dry gas portion or the currently more lucrative liquids-rich section of the play.

Investor takeaway
The Utica Shale is starting to become the economic powerhouse that McClendon envisioned. While it won't fuel returns for everyone, which is why Hess is pulling out of the dry gas portion of the play, it is moving the needle for companies like Chesapeake Energy and is likely to do the same for McClendon's new venture. Needless to say, investors shouldn't be writing off the Utica Shale as it still has the potential to fuel returns for the right companies.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rick Munarriz]

Families with young children found that out the hard way last month, when Viacom's (NASDAQ: VIA  ) Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. content was retired from Netflix's streaming library. Kids said bon voyage to SpongeBob SquarePants and adios to Dora the Explorer.

  • [By Tim Beyers]

No doubt the film's producers are relieved. World War Z's $190 million budget and well-known production snafus had some worrying that the film would be a John Carter-sized disaster for Viacom's (NASDAQ: VIA  ) Paramount Pictures. Instead, the studio is apparently already in talks about a sequel.

Rieder: A big victory for journalism in Philly

It's a huge victory for Philadelphia -- and for journalism.

The auction ending the ugly ownership melodrama that has engulfed The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News and philly.com over the past couple of years resulted Tuesday with the right faction prevailing.

MORE: Philly Inquirer minority owners win control

Over the past couple of years, the news outlets have been hamstrung by a bitter dispute between two groups of owners representing very different approaches to journalism.

One, headed by former New Jersey Nets owner Lewis Katz, supported a newsroom regime committed to ambitious enterprise reporting about the city's vexing and manifold social problems.

The other, led by insurance executive and South Jersey Democratic power George Norcross, wanted to move in the direction of small ball with an emphasis on hyperlocal news. It has controlled philly.com, the preeminent digital property of the news conglomerate, which is dominated by calorie-free sensationalism and linkbait.

On Tuesday, Katz and his ally among the owners, philanthropist H.F."Gerry" Lenfest, prevailed. While the auction overseen by Delaware Chancey Judge Donald Parsons was expected to be an epic brawl -- Norcross and Katz are highly successful players who don't much enjoy losing -- it instead turned out to be a one-punch knockout. The bidding started at $77 million. Katz and Lenfest bid $88 million. Norcross and Co. responded, "No mas." Game over.

Top 10 Building Product Companies To Invest In 2015

It marked the fifth -- yes fifth -- time in eight years that the embattled papers' ownership has changed hands. Katz and Norcross were among a group of business leaders who bought the news outlets from venture capitalists for $55 million in 2012.

So why does any of this matter to anyone besides the dueling owners, the journalists in the newsrooms and media junkies? Because jo! urnalism is a critical element in our democracy. And Philadelphia -- in many respects a world-class city but one dogged by daunting challenges in dealing with poverty, education and crime -- desperately needs serious watchdog journalism.

The symbol of what's at stake in this unusually bloody management battle is Bill Marimow, the Inquirer's editor. The simmering ownership dispute came to a boil last October when Publisher Bob Hall, a Norcross loyalist, fired Marimow. Katz promptly went to court and when the dust settled, Marimow had been reinstated. (Disclosure: Marimow is a friend and a fellow Philly guy.)

REM RIEDER: Philly newspapers star in ugly melodrama

Clearly, the situation was untenable, and the Delaware court was asked to dissolve the agreement that had formed owning company Interstate General Media and clean up the mess. Thus Tuesday's auction.

The ownership imbroglio was complicated by the fact that Interstate General Media was run by a management committee that consisted of two people, Katz and Norcross. Both had to sign off on major decisions, which was a challenge given that they don't agree on much of anything. Marimow's position was strengthened powerfully by the fact that Katz's longtime companion, Nancy Phillips, happens to be the Inquirer city editor -- and a Marimow protege.

Marimow won two Pulitzer prizes as a reporter and is widely respected for his devotion to and skill at fostering ambitious investigative reporting. But he has his detractors. He's been fired from a number of top newsroom positions, and was once demoted as the Inquirer's editor for being insufficiently digital.

And that's no small thing. Print journalism has been profoundly battered by the Internet, and newspaper companies are all frantically struggling to plot and implement a digital future.

REM RIEDER: Newspapers' urgent need to innovate

Marimow alluded to the challenges that lie ahead when I asked for his post-auction thoughts. His tenure would have last! ed about ! two seconds in the event the auction had gone the other way.

"There is," he said, "a lot of hard work to be done in the days ahead to ensure that excellent journalism – in The Inquirer, the Daily News and Philly.com – continues and that it leads to a viable, profitable business. I've always believed that great journalism – in print and in the multimedia world – will lead to profits, and that when a news organization is profitable, some of those profits can be plowed back into the newsrooms."

Profits? The Philly papers haven't seen any of them for quite awhile. Here's hoping Marimow is right. Because without a serious financial turnaround, all of the high-minded aspirations will be for naught.

If you look at the chart for Sky-mobi, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $3.31, $3.28 and $3.40 a share. That bottoming pattern occurred over the last two months. Shares of MOBI have now started to uptrend and flirt with its 50-day moving average of $3.76 a share. That move is quickly pushing MOBI within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MOBI if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.71 to $3.83 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 145,934 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then MOBI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $4.96 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then give MOBI a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $5.55 to $6.13 a share.

Traders can look to buy MOBI off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $3.40 to $3.28 a share. One can also buy MOBI off strength once it takes out that breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

One under-$10 wireless services player that looks poised for a big spike higher is KongZhong (KONG), which is a provider of WVAS and mobile games to mobile phone users and a wireless media company providing news, content, community and mobile advertising services through its wireless Internet sites in the PRC. This stock is off to a hot start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 53%.

If you take a look at the chart for KongZhong, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last two months, with shares plunging lower from its high of $14.92 to its recent low of $7.78 a share. During that downtrend, shares of KONG have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of KONG into oversold territory, since its current relative strength index reading is 30.21. Shares of KONG are now starting to spike higher off its recent low of $7.78 a share and off its 200-day moving average of $7.95 a share. This spike could be signaling that the downside volatility for KONG is over in the short-term and the stock is ready to trend higher.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in KONG if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $8.50 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 519,857 shares. Speaking of results ...
Right now, quarterly earnings season is well under way, which provides a perfect opportunity for one of those "check in from time to time" moments. While the iPIG portfolio did nothing last week, several of its picks did report, and those quarterly confessionals can help determine whether the companies are still worth owning. To summarize key results:

United Technologies (NYSE: UTX  ) reported decent numbers, with net earnings ahead of expectations but growth driven more by acquisitions than by organic improvements in its existing businesses. Given the company's conglomerate setup, growth by bolt-on acquisitions isn't surprising, but over the long haul, it'd be better to see its businesses growing internally as well as through acquisitions. The news at Mine Safety Appliances (NYSE: MSA  ) wasn't quite as good, with both revenues and net earnings falling from year ago levels on a tough environment for the mining businesses it supports. That's a risk well known to the company and its shareholders, though, and while the weaker results did knock the company's stock down, the business has ridden through tough cycles before. It looks capable of riding through this one, too. Hasbro (NASDAQ: HAS  ) , on the other hand, reported earnings that beat expectations on an operating basis, before restructuring charges knocked it down to a net loss. Given that the company is in the very seasonal toy business, that loss in an off-peak quarter is much less of a concern than it would have been in the make-or-break holiday quarter. UPS (NYSE: UPS  ) kept on trucking, with a better-than-expected January and strength from eCommerce helping the company turn in an 8% growth in net reported earnings per share. Overall, UPS is operating efficiently, though its future success is tied to its ability to continue delivering more packages. As long as its e-commerce business continues to grow, though, UPS is wel

Advisors' Opinion:

Early on Thursday, Wells Fargo analysts downgraded packaged foods company General Mills, Inc. (GIS), as they see limited upside in the stock due to an increasingly cautious outlook on U.S. retail food fundamentals.

The analysts downgraded GIS from “Outperform” to “Market Perform” and see shares reaching a range between $48 and $50, down from the previous valuation range of $53 to $55. This new price target range suggests a slight downside to the stock’s Wednesday closing price of $50.15.

“GIS features a portfolio uniquely positioned for long-term global growth, in our view, but near term, consumer headwinds, weak food industry volumes, and the potential for heightened food promotion may temper earnings growth and weigh on investor sentiment,” said Wells Fargo analyst John Baumgartner.

General Mills shares were down $1.00, or 1.99%, during early morning trading on Thursday. The stock is up 21.62% year-to-date.
