Top 10 Oil Service Stocks To Invest In 2014

Is a big merger brewing in the oil services field?

Citing people familiar with the deal, the Wall Street Journal reports that Halliburton (HAL) is in talks to buy Baker Hughes (BHI). The talks are reportedly moving quickly and the two could soon reach an agreement.

What about a price? The newspaper couldn get a number, but argues that any deal would have to bring a premium to Baker Hughes $21.6 billion market capitalization.

Investors seem to approve. Baker Hughes surged 15.2% to close at $58.75 shortly before today closing bell, while Halliburton jumped just over 1% to end at $53.79.

If it happens, Halliburton buying Baker Hughes would be one of the biggest acquisitions for the industry in recent memory. It comes at a time when companies related to the oil industry from major producers to offshore drillers — have been battered by slipping crude oil prices.

Crude oil for December delivery fell below $75 a barrel today for the first time in more than three years, and dragged energy stocks along for the ride.

On Tuesday, AbbVie Inc (ABBV) released phase III results from the SAPPHIRE-II study, which is the second of six phase 3 studies for the treatment of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 (GT1) infection.

AbbVie reported that in the study, which included 394 patients, 96% of those who has previously failed pegylated interferon and ribavirin treatment in the past sustained virologic response at 12 weeks with the regimen.

AbbVie shares were mostly flat during Tuesday morning trading. The stock is up 50% YTD.

  • [By Keith Speights]

How accurate those peak sales projections will actually be depends in large part on the competition, though. Pharmacyclics benefited from AbbVie's (NYSE: ABBV  ) bad news in February after the company suspended its development of leukemia drug ABT-199. However, AbbVie told FierceBiotech that it expects to move forward with the studies later this year and could yet be a rival for Pharmacyclics.

Finally, shares of drug maker AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV  ) added 3.8% at the expense of peer Idenix Pharmaceuticals, which imploded after the Food and Drug Administration placed a hold on clinical trials for experimental hepatitis-C drug, IDX20963. The FDA is requesting Idenix supply the agency with additional safety data before it'll let it start clinical trials for IDX20963, placing the company even further behind in the hepatitis-C race. AbbVie, on the other hand, is in great share with its oral hep-c trio performing very in trials and looking like the only serious competitor to Gilead Sciencessofosbuvir -- assuming, of course, that it gets approved.

The Company conducted Phase I, Phase II and Phase III clinical trials comparing the performance of its Linjeta formulation of RHI to either Humulin, which is a branded formulation of RHI or Humalog. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 specialty biopharmaceutical player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Biodel (BIOD), which is focused on the development and commercialization of innovative treatments for diabetes. This stock has been hit hard by the bears over the last three months, with shares down by 24%.

If you take a look at the chart for Biodel, you'll notice that this stock is ripping higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $2.32 a share with strong upside volume. Volume on Thursday has so far registered over 750,000 shares, which is well above its three-month average action of 445,084 shares. This move is quickly pushing shares of BIOD within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in BIOD if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.52 to $2.60 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 445,084 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then BIOD will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels $3 to its 200-day moving average of $3.39 a share. Any high-volume move above $3.39 will then give BIOD a chance to tag $4 a share.

Traders can look to buy BIOD off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $2.10 a share. One can also buy BIOD off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Biodel (NASDAQ: BIOD) is expected to post a Q1 loss at $0.24 per share.

First Majestic Silver (NYSE: AG) is estimated to post its Q1 earnings at $0.10 per share on revenue of $63.35 million.

Auto firms, such as Toyota Motor (TM) and Fuji Heavy Industries (TSE:7270), generated notable absolute gains for the Fund during the quarter. These stocks were buoyed by the weakening yen, as well as a continued improvement in the U.S. auto market in which these firms derive a large portion of their business. We believe there is potential for Japanese automakers to improve their competitive position in the years to come as the downward pressure from a strong yen has reversed course.
